My Journey
An outline of some of my recent and notable work and education
Edinburgh University
Computationally Applied Mathematics MSC
September 2023 - Graduating November 2024
This Masters course is more mathematical and computational than my undergrad. It is nice to apply some of the problem solving skills I have learnt to different problems, along with building up a greater appreciation for how computational methods can be used to solve the problems that I have learnt about previously.
As part of the course I have developed programming skills in Python, R and Julia. I have studied the modelling of complex problems and mathematical methods used therein. Highlights of the course are developing machine learning models for regression and classification, coding agent based models to investigate bird migration and my project: developing a classification model based on sentinel 1 SAR (radar satellite) data to identify areas of deforestation in the Amazon.
AJ Bell Summer Internship
Salford, Manchester
Summer 2023
With the other interns I worked on projects centred on automating the work of the investments team. I was able to use my technical skills as part of my Physics degree. I really enjoyed my time at AJ Bell and I found all of us interns got on particularly well. Highlights of my time there would be learning more about work in industry and the finance sector, along with teamwork and leadership skills that I was not able to develop during my degree.
Durham University
BSc Physics: First Class Honours
September 2020 - June 2023
Studying physics at university was fascinating and very rewarding for me. But I also saw the problems that arose when education is managed at such a large scale and how these can take away from the passion a student has for their subject. The motivation of great physicists and mathematicians lies in more playful, curious, and problem-based learning rather than formal schooling — Einstein, Gauss, and Feynman serve as examples. This is beside the point; in the degree, I learned a host of skills and improved my problem-solving. I developed persistence for tough problems, along with rigorous computational and mathematical skills. My final year project was a quantum mechanics project based around modelling the helium nucleus. In particular, I enjoyed modules in cosmology and fluid mechanics.
Ecrin Hotel, Tignes, France
Ski Season
Winter 2019 - 2020
After my A-Levels I took a gap year and worked in a Hotel in the French Alps. I worked as part of the chalet team and had duties such as making up rooms, waiting tables, managing the bar, nightshifts and more. I greatly enjoyed all parts of my time in France: the skiing, working as part of a team and practicing my French.
Private Tutor
Beginning September 2019
I started tutoring after my A-Levels. I have been tutoring mainly Maths and Physics at GCSE and A-Level. For the same reason why I chose to pursue Maths and Physics, I find the problem solving nature of these subjects immensely satisfying, so tutoring comes quite naturally to me.
Secondary Education
Cranleigh School
2014 - 2019
For my A-Levels I took: Pre-U Mathematics (D1 / A**), Physics (A*), Chemistry (A), EPQ (A*), and later Pre-U Further Mathematics (D1 / A**). For my GCSEs I achieved 7A*s and 4As.
